Ujima Health Connect exists to ensure that it isn't.
What we are
Ujima Health Connect is a free, searchable directory of healthcare providers who serve Black and underserved communities across North Carolina. Whether you're looking for a primary care doctor in Durham, a mental health therapist in Greensboro, or a specialist in a rural county, Ujima is built to help you find them faster.
We are a community resource — not a medical referral service, not an insurance network, and not affiliated with any health system. We simply connect people to providers.
Why "Ujima"
Ujima is one of the seven principles of Kwanzaa. It means collective work and responsibility — the idea that we build and maintain community together, and that we hold each other's wellbeing as a shared obligation.
That principle drives everything we do. Finding quality care shouldn't depend on who you know or what zip code you live in. It should be something our community can do together — for each other.
Who we serve
Ujima Health Connect is for anyone seeking healthcare providers in North Carolina. Our directory prioritizes providers who:
- Practice in or near underserved and rural communities
- Have demonstrated experience serving Black patients and families
- Offer culturally responsive care
- Include LGBTQ+-affirming providers
- Work across a range of insurance types and payment options
We welcome providers of all backgrounds who are committed to equitable, compassionate care.
How we built this
This directory grew out of a simple, recurring problem: patients asking for provider recommendations in Facebook groups, Instagram comments, and text chains because they couldn't find reliable information anywhere else. Ujima is an attempt to build the infrastructure those conversations deserve.
How the directory works
Basic provider listings are free and publicly searchable at no cost to providers or patients. Listings are initially created from publicly available information and reviewed before going live.
Providers can upgrade to a Verified or Featured tier to claim their profile at any time to verify their information and have access to modify and update their profile listing.
Ujima reviews all listings for a valid NPI number and active licensure before approval. Listings may be denied at our sole discretion. That said, details like patient availability and insurance acceptance can change at any time — we encourage patients to confirm current information directly with a provider's office and to use this directory as a starting point, not a substitute for their own research.
